May 2020

This felt like a very long month!

Maybe cause it is been a really hot May, or might be cause the covid-19 craziness is still going on?
Anyways, it was an interesting month.

some highlights...
The stay-at-home orders were eased up a bit this month. Beginning May 5th, more places were allowed to open and some people were able to go back to work. The CDC has suggested that the virus has a harder time spreading when we wear face coverings. So, some places like Costco have required masks on customers, and a lot of people feel that is infringing on their freedoms for some reason, not sure why. I was not wearing a mask at first, because I felt if not everyone is doing it, it doesn't matter. But then my attitude changed when I realized what a jerk I was being. I don't want to disrespect those who are trying to improve the situation and those who have real fears about the virus. So, we are wearing masks when we go places that are harder to keep social distance (like the store), out of respect and kindness to others. It does not stop me from doing the things i'd like to do but it might if I don't do it.
May 13th, our gym opened back up. YAY! It was so great to go back into the gym again, lift with a women's bar and challenge myself against others. I am so grateful for my friend who let me come to her house everyday to use her garage gym, other wise I would've died with that first workout!
We've bought a few toys. New grill and a Su Vide, so we have been cooking some delicious food! Mark pretty much cooked every dinner in May. We have been enjoying our new hobby together, and a husband who cooks is super hot.
The kids went on their first shopping trip since March and were troopers wearing the Masks.

Lily and Jacob made us these drinks using jelly beans and hot tamales. They have been having a good time being inventive

The kids were excited about their new clothes...it's the little things that make us happy these days.

The Sou Vide...ooolala! Best buy ever!

Memorial Day Murph! I did far worse this year then previous, but Mark killed it!

Lily continued at home learning thru her school. It wasn't too bad. We just did as many assignments as possible during the week and spent like three hours a day doing school work. The last two weeks of school, the teachers were done. They weren't really sending any more assignments, so technically we have been on summer vacation. The last day of school the teachers were going to go thru our neighborhood for a teachers parade. We waited two and a half hours for them to come by, but they never came! They got split up during the route and canceled it. The kids were bummed, but we got to see and play with friends. The kids were so excited to see their friends.

Lily's sweet treacher Mrs. Boxley came by with a cookie for her. She completed the most Math facts in her class, go lily!

We went to Tucson to finally be with family. We celebrated my moms and Tinas birthday. And celebrated mothers day the next day. It was so nice to spend time with my mom. I missed her so much during the quarantine! We went on a morning walk just the two of us, and walked thru some of the new home models around her neighborhood. We all helped Mark in the Kitchen to make our mothers day meal, Mark did an excellent job using his new Su Vide. Lily even made me breakfast in bed. It was probably one of my favorite mothers day's.

I can never get over how tiny she is. lol!

Best Jello ever!!

It's a thing now to make bread during stay-at-home time. We made rosemary bread and it was delicious.

Lily made me breakfast in bed...it was the best!!

We've been spending a lot of time outside, despite the triple digit temps. Jacob got a new tricycle, and lily got an upgrade to a two wheeler. She's only rode her tricycle a handful of times, but managed to learn how to ride a two wheeler in one lesson! She's a champ! Our garden is also growing nicely, we have about 4 watermelons growing, three red peppers and a tomato...trying to get more tomatoes, but I lack a green thumb. We met with landscapers to plan to redo our backyard, hopefully we will be able to do that in October.

Our tree got a haircut...wish I could get one. lol

Jacob and lily have been meditating lately. Home must be more stressful for them then I thought!

Jacob wants to be Spiderman. So, at the park he decided to make a big jump and landed on his back. His dreams of being Spiderman have been shattered. Poor little sweetie

from the left, pepper tree, watermelon vine, Tomato plant. The vines for the watermelon are going everywhere! They are much bigger now, this was about a month ago.

It's splash pad time!

In March I went to the doctor due to a lump in my throat when I'd swallow since February. It took forever for them to schedule labs and ultrasound due to all the covid stuff delaying everything. Ultrasound showed I had a 13mm nodule on the right side of my thyroid. I had to wait till end of this month to get a biopsy. I had to take the Covid test, which was terribly incomfortable, probably the craziest sensation I felt when they stuck a long q-tip in my nasal cavity. Did not hurt, but so weird! and I had a COVID antibody test, both came out negative. So, I finally had my thyroid biopsy on the 26th this month. They stuck seven thin needles in my throught to get samples. It surprisingly did not hurt, just uncomfortable. The worst part was having to wear a face mask thru it all. I have been so nervous since they found the nodule, thinking that I may have Thyroid Cancer. I know that Thyroid Cancer has a very high survival rate, and there are definitely worse diagnoises, I just didn't want to have my husband and children worry, or to be separated from them during radiation therapy or to have to say I've had cancer! I have been working so hard to keep myself healthy for my family. My health has been perfect. So the idea of having cancer was so frustrating to fathom.  And I knew the likely hood of it being malignant was low, but you still worry about these things, right? Well, I received an email message from my doctors office with the results, and I almost passed out before opening it I was so nervous. But, the result are benign! NO CANCER!  Such a huge relief! I still want to get the nodule removed, but I am so thrilled I don't have to go thru cancer treatment. Things like this definitely make you appreciate your life and time you've been given.
Just after my biopsy. The face is for the mask...not the biopsy. lol

Mark and I joined a weightloss comp the first week of March with our gym. We did good in March, April we lost momentum after Easter and then picked it up again in May. Mark did a great job as he always does. I did not lose as much as I had originally planned, but I do not regret joining. It gave me the momentum I needed to get passed a weight i'd been trying to get over. And it helped me to change my focus from worrying about the biopsy. Lost 12 lbs, and 3 percent body fat...not too shabby.

There are riots going on all over the country right now due to a man, George Floyd who was wrongfully murdered by police. The officer held him under is knee on concrete for 10 minutes while he told them he couldn't breath. Medical personnel and other people tried to intervene but were threatened by the officer. The man died. He was black. He offense, potential forgery, a non-violent crime. Which has caused even more out cry from the people as to why this senseless act of brutality had to happen. Last month we learned a black man named Ahumad Arbery was jogging around his neighborhood was shot and killed by two white males who thought he was a burglar cause he was running so fast...so you kill him?! This was in February and we didn't hear about it till May, and the men were not arrested till May! Both situations were recorded and published for everyone to see. Breonna Taylor, shot and killed in her apartment when police entered with a 'no-knock warrant' shot 8 times. Mark and I were discussing how hard it must be to fear for your children based on the color of their skin. It has been 183 years since slavery was abolished, and we still have poor treatment towards blacks. How is this not crazy to everyone in the world?! I am so sickened and saddened by this behavior. I could not imagine the pain of those mothers, fearing that their child will be acted against in violence because of a skin color they had no control over. This has to change!

As our little bubble is peaceful and happy, I just want a peaceful world for my children outside our bubble. I always pray that my children will be agents for peace in this sometimes terrible world.

Grandma Betty Ontiveros

(Letters wrote and placed in Grandma O's grave. We miss her and will always remember her, and look forward to the day we can see her again.)

Grandma Ontiveros,

I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had to know you. I feel that I did not get enough time with you in my life, but I am thankful for the time I had. You are by far my favorite person in the family (possibly even over Mark). Thank you for being an example to me of love, charity and goodness. My favorite memories with you were family get togethers, every Saturday night for dinner. Watching you, with your arms folded, laughing, with a large grin on you face as the family shared precious memories and daily events, always brought happiness to my heart as I knew there was no where else you’d rather be then in the company of your family. Thank you for always making me feel welcomed in your family circle. You always helped me feel loved, that I belonged in your family. I never really knew my grandparents, but with you, I felt I had a grandmother who loved me. I loved your stories, your songs and your sassy personality, we all knew ‘you don’t mess with Grandma!’ Your love for Mark and Lily was beautiful. I love when Mark shares stories with me about you in his childhood, I can tell you both had a close friendship, you were a wonderful influence in his life and I give a lot of credit to you for the man that he is now. I often will watch the videos we took of you singing the birthday song ‘blow out the candles on the cake and make a wish…’ this has become a tradition in our family to sing for birthdays in your honor, so we feel you near. You always made effort to play with Lily. While adults would be talking, you would play peek-a-boo with her, sometimes for the entire two hours! You watched her for me so I could work, when she was still very little, which was not easy I’m sure. But I was so happy that you loved her so much to help us, you were always willing to serve your family, no matter how difficult. Never complaining, never making anyone feel that you were not enjoying your time, you had incredible patience for your loved ones. You were truly an unselfish person, no motive, never seeking personal gain from giving, you only wanted your family to be happy and never asked for anything in return. I pray that you now have peace from earthly physical struggles, and that you are re-untied now with your loved ones in Heaven, until we can all be together again. I love you and will miss you terribly. Thank you for being in my life.

–Andrea Ontiveros

I miss you so much and, I just wish you could be with me longer to see me grow up.  I wish I could see you  again in my life. Love lily Ontiveros

I love you grandma O and I miss you. – Jacob Ontiveros

Grandma, I love you so much. I am so grateful for all the time I was able to spend with you. I will always cherish the Friday night sleepovers and then going to the Tucson Mall all day Saturday. I will always remember that you never missed one of my basketball games. I appreciate more than you could know all the support you provided me no matter what I wanted to do. I remember you taking me to my golf lessons and then sitting in your car for hours while I practiced. I remember you always taking me to the batting cage no matter the weather. I am greatful for the example that you set for me in how to treat people and how to make everyone feel special. I love you and I will miss you so much but I am know that I will get to see you again one day. –Mark Ontiveros
